About The Parkinson's Supprt Group of Brevard ,

Melbourne Florida





Officers and Committees

Parkinsons support group of Brevard (PSGB) is based in Melbourne, Florida and serves the central and southern part of the county. The Parkinson’s Support Group of North Brevard serves Titusville.  PSGB consists of over 120 members. While most of our members are senior citizens we also have some early onset Parkinsons’ member. The organization has 501(c) tax exempt status, is self funding and is not affiliated with any foundation or religious orgsanization.

While our group is interactive and everyone in the group is equally important, there are a rotating group of elected members that help manage the Brevard Parkinson's Support Group and are available for your questions, comments and input.

Co-President

  

The President shall be responsible for ensuring the continuing and reliable operation of the BPSG, implemented through appropriate oversight of the work of the officers of the organization. The President shall preside over the regular monthly BPSG meetings. The President shall also be responsible for calling and presiding over meetings of the Executive Committee, as needed, to ensure the smooth operation of the organization.

Chuck was diagnosed with Parkinson's in 2007.  He and Rhonda joined the support group in May of 2008.  Since joining, Chuck gave a Tai Chi demonstration and arranged for a class geared to Parkinson’s people.  Chuck has his own remodeling business..   Rhonda is an Information Systems Project Manager.  Chuck served as Rear Commodore of the East Coast Sailing Assoc. and  President of the Down Under Dive Club  for three years.  Rhonda served as Commodore of the Melbourne Yacht Club.   She is also a member of the Project Management  Institute .  They both enjoy golf, sailing, diving and singing.  Chuck also enjoys competition shooting.  Their goal is to ensure the group stays focused on its mission of being a support to people with Parkinson's

Co-Vice President/Programs Chairman

  

The Vice President shall fulfill the duties of the President when the President is unavailable to perform them. The Vice President shall also hold the position of Programs Chairman. The Programs Chairman shall be responsible for establishing a program of activities for the monthly meetings. These activities shall frequently involve a speaker to address the group on important aspects of the treatment or management of Parkinson’s disease. The Programs Chairman shall be responsible for securing such speakers and coordinating with them..  

Lynden was diagnosed with Parkinson's in January of 2005.  She joined the support group in September of 2005.  Since joining Ken and Lynden have prepared a draft constitution. Before retiring, Ken worked as a senior telecommunications engineer.  Lynden worked as a secretary in the field of education and has previous volunteer experiences.  Ken has served as treasurer of the Melbourne Yacht Club.  They enjoy international travel. Ken is an avid biker and Lynden enjoys cooking.  Their goal is to provide interesting programs for the group.  In addition, when their term in office is over they want to provide continuity in succession planning

Treasurer

The Treasurer shall be responsible for receiving and disbursing all BPSG funds, including the annual dues, and maintain adequate financial records of receipts, disbursements and cash on hand. Disbursal of funds shall be subject to the review and approval of the President. The Treasurer shall maintain a record of the receipt of the annual dues of each member/couple. The Treasurer shall present an annual financial report to the board and membership in February of each year. Communications

The Communications Committee shall be responsible all communications material developed by and for the group, including writing and arranging for the publishing and distribution of a monthly newsletter and maintaining the BPSG website. 

The Communications Chairman shall also  be responsible for  managing the relationship between the group and the media, including placing announcements of monthly meetings and newsworthy articles in appropriate public news sources.

Membership          

The Membership Committee shall be responsible for maintaining the Membership Roster of the BPSG and publishing an annual Membership Directory in March of each year; available for distribution to the membership at monthly meetings

  

Don was diagnosed with Parkinson's in 1998.  He joined the support group in  2003.  Since joining  Don created the group’s brochure and helped distribute the newsletter. Prior to retiring Don worked as Director of Customer and Public Relations  Don also served on the Palm Bay Chamber of Commerce at  the Economic Development Council.   Don enjoys bowling and spending time   with his grandchildren.  His  goal is to increase membership and ensure good communication.

Hospitality

        

The Hospitality Chairman shall be responsible for securing a member or member couple to provide refreshments for each monthly meeting.

  

Wendy joined the support group  in 2003 after husband Don was diagnosed with Parkinson’s.    She and Don have been active members.  Wendy is a homemaker and caregiver.  She enjoys playing tennis and spending time with her grandchildren. Advocacy

  

The Advocacy Committee shall be responsible for promoting the needs of Parkinson's people in the community. The committee will survey the support group periodically for needs and develop projects to address those needs. Examples of projects completed in the past include developing a website to address communications.  Additional activities include public relations networking, and participating in health fairs.

  

  

Deb has had Parkinson's since October of 2005. Ron and Deb joined to the Parkinson's Support Group a year ago.  Since that time Deb has been publishing the newsletter and launched an Advocacy Project that spawned the website.  Both Ron and Deb worked as senior managers in the field of information technology. More recently they have been working as independent consultants. Ron is also an instructor for a professional institute. They have visited m ore than 50 countries.  Deb is a published writer and also paints.  Their vision for their offices is to provide timely and informative information and improve the connection between information, services and Parkinson's people
