The following is a list of Events and Classes that may be of interest tol Parkinson’s members.  It is not comprehensive nor does it imply a recommendation or endorsement by the Brevard Parkinson’s Support Group.  The list is provided for information only.


  

  

Weekly Exercise classes

BeachSide  Health Studio 1220 N.SR A1A, Indialantic

Small group classes for people who needed something after formal physical therapy is finished but can't quite participate in regular fitness programs.   Classes are taught by a licensed physical therapist.  Classes include Yoga, Pilates, QIGON,  Zumba,  belly dancing and TRX., Call 725-2267 for the current schedule. Classes are  $15 or 10 for $130.  They will also arrange classes for us if we have enough interest.  If interested call Deb Ridel at 751-0444.

The Functional Therapy Center

Sunbay Fitness Gym 5410 Murrell Rd. Suite 125 in Viera.    

Offers free Tai Chi every Friday from  4:45 to 5:45 at Sunbay Fitness Gym 5410 Murrell Rd. Suite 125 in Viera.  You should wear white top and bottom and nonskid flexible shoes. Caregivers can participate. Call 637-3383 for more information

Riverfront Park on the boardwalk in Cocoa Village. The park is located off Causeway 520 before the river going eastbound. 

  
  
  

Essential Massage of Cocoa Village is offering a Tai Chi class that can be tailored for Parkinson's people.  Tai chi is a system of rounded fluid and balanced movements created to relax the mind as well as the body.  Once the secret art form Tai Chi is now practiced for health, meditation, enjoyment, relaxation and self-defense by millions of people in China and around the world.  There are studies under way to demonstrate benefits of Tai Chi for helping Parkinson's people with balance and gate. 

The cost is five dollars per class.  There are benches available but you may want to bring your own chair.  You not need a reservation just show up.  The class is divided by skill level.  Make sure to identify yourself as a Parkinson's person  Instructors are Mohammed Haqq and Eileen Saylor, Mohammed has been practicing martial arts since 1978.  He has given numerous demonstrations workshops and seminars around the country.

One Senior Place

The Fountains Senior Living is facilitating a weekly Strength & Flexibility Exercise Class called "Seniors on Strength" at One Senior Place, Viera. This is a dynamic combination of strength, flexibility and cardiovascular conditioning exercises. The exercises are designed to increase your agility, mobility, stability, balance, flexibility and coordination. For more information call Libbi Hash, Wellness Director of the Fountains at 984-1494 ext 21.  (Note this class is not geared specifically for people with disablties.  Consult your physician before starting any such program.
